I brought my grandmother’s recipes to Nashville.
In Senegal, karité is not a trend — it is what my mother rubbed into my skin before school, what my grandmother sold at the market in tins she saved all year. When I moved to Tennessee, I could not find it. Not the real thing.
So I began importing it myself, straight from the women who press it. Every jar of shea is whipped by hand. Every bar of soap cures on a rack before it ever reaches you. Nothing leaves this shop that I would not put on my own children.
Adja’s is a family business, and it is for my community here — a place where Senegalese craft is treated as the luxury it has always been.
